Teen sensation Liutova claims maiden WTA title in Memphis

Sixteen-year-old Kristina Liutova has announced herself on the WTA Tour with a stunning run to the title at the Memphis Classic.


The Russian qualifier, ranked 229th in the world going into the week, won her first tour-level trophy on Sunday, beating Czech player Darja Vidmanova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the final. It was the first edition of this WTA 250 event in Tennessee, and the win made Liutova the first player born in the 2010s to claim a main-tour singles title.

She's also the youngest WTA champion since Coco Gauff triumphed in Linz back in 2019.

Remarkably, Liutova had never played a main-draw match at this level before the tournament. She came through qualifying, then knocked out top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova (who retired mid-match), Maya Joint, Caty McNally and Elvina Kalieva en route to the final. In the title match itself she shrugged off a shaky start, dropping the opening set before seizing control and sealing victory in just over two hours.

Afterwards, she paid tribute to her family, especially her mother: "Look where we got. Look where you brought me. Since I was three years old you've done such an amazing job," she said during the trophy presentation.

Born in Moscow and now based at an academy in Redmond, Washington, Liutova has had a meteoric rise this year. She's set to climb well inside the top 150 when the rankings update — a remarkable turnaround for a player who started 2026 ranked outside the top 700.
