Bangladesh Stun Australia to Seal Historic Test Victory

Bangladesh have produced one of the biggest surprises in recent Test cricket, beating Australia by nine wickets in Darwin to claim their first Test victory on Australian soil.

Chasing just 57 on the fourth morning at Marrara Oval, Bangladesh needed only 14 overs to complete a famous win. Mominul Haque hit the winning boundary off Beau Webster and finished unbeaten on 30, while Shadman Islam was 25 not out.

The only moment of concern came when Josh Hazlewood dismissed first-innings centurion Tanzid Hasan for a duck. But Bangladesh quickly settled down and reached their target with ease.

The victory is only Bangladesh's second Test win over Australia, following their famous success in Dhaka in 2017. They are also just the third Asian team, after India and Pakistan, to win a Test in Australia.

The result was even more remarkable given what happened only a week earlier. Bangladesh were bowled out for just 54 by a Cricket Australia XI in a warm-up match at the same ground. They then produced a completely different performance when the Test began.

Australia won the toss and batted first, but were bowled out for 198 on the opening day. Hasan Mahmud was the star with a career-best 6 for 55, while Steve Smith's 71 was the only major contribution from the Australian batting line-up.

Bangladesh responded brilliantly, scoring 426 and taking a huge 228-run lead. Tanzid Hasan made 101, becoming the first Bangladeshi to score a Test century in Australia. Najmul Hossain Shanto added 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 65.

Hazlewood took 6 for 89 and reached the milestone of 300 Test wickets, but Bangladesh had already taken control of the match.

Australia fought harder in their second innings, with Cameron Green scoring a determined 104, his first Test century at home. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz eventually broke their resistance with 5 for 66. He removed Alex Carey, Beau Webster and Pat Cummins before trapping Nathan Lyon lbw to end Australia's innings at 284.

Hasan Mahmud finished the match with nine wickets and was named Player of the Match.

For Australia, the defeat is a serious early setback in their home season. For Bangladesh, it is a landmark victory and one that will be remembered as one of the finest upsets in their Test history.

The second and final Test begins in Mackay on 22 August.
