Ajinkya Rahane has confirmed his retirement from international cricket, bringing to a close a 12-year journey marked by resilience, class and understated leadership.


The Mumbai-born batter played 85 Tests for India, scoring 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, with 12 centuries to his name. It was in the Test arena that Rahane truly made his mark, becoming one of India's most dependable middle-order operators, particularly when conditions turned tough overseas.

He also had solid stints in the shorter formats, featuring in 90 ODIs for 2,962 runs and 20 T20Is for 375 runs, showing he could adapt to whatever role the side needed.

The high point of his career came during India's historic tour of Australia in 2020-21. Thrust into the captaincy under trying circumstances - and with India having been bowled out for just 36 in the opening Test at Adelaide - Rahane steadied the ship and led a weakened Indian side to a memorable 2-1 series win, capped by a superb century in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne. It remains one of the great triumphs in Indian cricket history.

Rahane was never one for the spotlight, but he earned deep respect for leading quietly and by example. Announcing the decision himself on social media, he reflected on his journey from travelling as a young boy from Dombivli just to practise, right through to pulling on the India cap. "I've always relied on timing in my batting," he said, "and I feel the timing is right for me to move on."

Tributes have flowed in from teammates, opponents and fans alike, with many highlighting not just his batting but the honesty and professionalism he brought to the game throughout.

As Rahane steps away from the international stage, he leaves behind a legacy built on humility, determination and a rare ability to rise when his country needed him most - a career that will be remembered as much for its dignity as for its runs.
