Messi Closes In On Golden Boot As Argentina Reach The Final

Argentina are through to the World Cup final, and it's brought some very good news for one man in particular: Lionel Messi now looks nailed-on to finish the tournament as top scorer.

Messi, who most reckon is playing his last ever World Cup, was already having a stormer of a tournament. But with Kylian Mbappé and France knocked out in the semis, his closest rival for the Golden Boot is gone, and the race suddenly looks a lot simpler.



The Argentine skipper has been at his brilliant best, netting around eight goals and turning up with moments of pure class that have carried his side within one game of the trophy. Not bad going for a 39-year-old — his reading of the game and finishing are as sharp as ever.

Erling Haaland is still lurking not far behind on the scoring charts, so it's not quite done and dusted. But with Argentina in the final and only one game left to play, Messi holds all the cards. A goal or two on 19 July could be enough to wrap up the Golden Boot for the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.

The verdict

Given how the tournament's gone, this feels like it's shaping up to be the perfect send-off. Messi picking up the Golden Boot in what's likely his final World Cup would be the fairytale ending Argentine fans have been dreaming of — one last bit of magic, and one more prize for the cabinet, as he leads his country into the final.
