England Stun France 6-4 In Wild Bronze Medal Thriller

Well, nobody saw that coming. England beat France 6-4 in an extraordinary third-place play-off on Friday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, in what's already being talked about as one of the best bronze medal matches the World Cup has ever seen.

It's a huge moment for England too — this is their best World Cup finish since they won the whole thing back in 1966, and their first-ever third-place result.

How it unfolded

England came flying out of the traps. Declan Rice got things going early, before Ezri Konsa added a second. Then Bukayo Saka took over, scoring twice before the break to make it four. By half-time, England were 4-0 up and cruising.

France weren't about to lie down though. Kylian Mbappé pulled two back himself — taking his tournament tally to ten in the process and breaking Lionel Messi's all-time World Cup goal record along the way. Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé also got on the scoresheet as France roared back into it, with reports suggesting a fourth French goal came from either Dayot Upamecano or another team-mate — accounts differ slightly on that one.

Just as France threatened a remarkable turnaround, Saka completed his hat-trick with a late penalty, and Jude Bellingham wrapped things up deep into stoppage time to make it 6-4 and see England home.

The verdict

It's worth remembering this wasn't a step towards the trophy — both sides were already out, beaten in the semi-finals (England by Argentina, France by Spain), and this was simply the consolation game to decide who went home with bronze. But you'd never have guessed that from the football on show. Ten goals, a huge fightback, a hat-trick, and a piece of history for Mbappé all in one match — not bad for a game neither side really wanted to play in.

The final between Argentina and Spain follows on Sunday.
