Sri Lanka kept their semi-final hopes flickering with a nerve-shredding three-wicket win over Scotland, getting home with just one ball to spare in their highest successful run-chase at a Women's T20 World Cup. It's also the first time Sri Lanka have managed three wins in a single edition of the tournament — and they badly needed every run of it, given how much their net run rate was riding on a quick win.

How it went

Put in to bat, Scotland made a slow start but built nicely through the middle, with Darcey Carter grinding out 34 off 34 balls to anchor the innings. Sri Lanka were sharp in the field — two run-outs and a tidy display from the slower bowlers kept Scotland's total in check through the middle overs. A late stand between Ailsa Lister and Sarah Bryce gave the innings a lift, and Bryce finished unbeaten on 47 to push Scotland to a competitive 151 for 6.

Chasing under serious pressure — Sri Lanka needed not just the win but a fast one, to boost their net run rate — captain Chamari Athapaththu came out swinging. She smashed six fours and a six in a blistering 33 off just 16 balls, dragging the powerplay score to 65, the highest by Sri Lanka all tournament, before being bowled by Katherine Fraser in the sixth over.

Losing their captain opened the door for Scotland, who hit back hard. Fraser, Kathryn Bryce and Rachel Slater each picked up two wickets as the required runs piled on the pressure, and Sri Lanka slipped to 118 for 6 after 15 overs — suddenly facing a real collapse.

That's when Nilakshika Silva took charge. She held her nerve through a tense finish, steering the lower order home with an unbeaten 21, and the match went right down to the last over. Scotland had a let-off when Slater cramped up and couldn't finish her spell, and with the tension cranked all the way up, Sugandika Kumari finally sealed it with a boundary through the third-man region.

What it means

The win lifts Sri Lanka to third in Group B, putting them firmly in the hunt for the second semi-final spot alongside West Indies and New Zealand, with England already through. For Scotland, it's a hard one to take after pushing a stronger side to the very last ball, but their tournament is now over on the knockout front.

The bottom line: A proper rollercoaster of a game — Athapaththu's fireworks at the top, a wobble in the middle, and Nilakshika Silva's composure under pressure to see Sri Lanka home. Scotland will be gutted, but they gave everything in a contest that went right to the wire.
