Mexico 1–0 South Korea (Group A, FIFA World Cup 2026)
It wasn’t the most thrilling game you’ll ever see, but it got the job done for the hosts. Mexico ground out a narrow 1-0 win over South Korea in Guadalajara on Thursday evening, becoming the first team at this World Cup to book their place in the Round of 32.
The first half was pretty cagey and low on quality. Mexico had the better of the early play at the Estadio Akron, but they couldn’t find a way through a well-organised South Korean side. By half-time, the Koreans were starting to look the more dangerous, and the home crowd were getting a bit restless.
The breakthrough came just five minutes after the restart, and it had a bit of good fortune about it. A looping header from Raúl Jiménez caused chaos in the Korean box. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu came out to claim it but collided with his own defender and spilled the ball. Luis Romo was the quickest to react, hooking it into the empty net for the only goal of the match.
South Korea pushed hard for an equaliser after that, and they probably shaded the expected goals. But Mexico’s young goalkeeper Raúl Rangel pulled off a couple of superb late saves – including a brilliant double stop – to keep the clean sheet and secure the three points.
Overall verdict: It was a gritty, professional performance from Javier Aguirre’s side rather than a vintage display. Mexico now top Group A with two wins from two and six points, and they’ve got a home fixture against Czechia to come. South Korea will feel hard done by after that goalkeeper error, but they’re still well in the mix for qualification. A typical early World Cup scrap – not pretty, but very effective for El Tri.
