Argentina wrapped up a perfect group stage with a 3-1 win over Jordan, even with Lionel Scaloni making nine changes and leaving Lionel Messi out of his starting eleven. It made little difference in the end — the world champions were good enough to see off a brave Jordan side, who bow out of their first-ever World Cup with credit.

Argentina were in control from early on, and took the lead in the 19th minute through a gorgeous Giovani Lo Celso free-kick, curled in from just outside the box. Things got a little chaotic in the build-up to the second goal — Julián Álvarez cracked the crossbar, and in the scramble that followed, a foul on Marcos Senesi handed Argentina a penalty, which Lautaro Martínez duly converted to make it 2-0 just past the half-hour mark.

Jordan came out with intent after the break, and their changes at half-time paid off. A neat move down the right saw Al Mardi and Ehsan Haddad combine, with Haddad's cross swept home by Mousa Al-Tamari to pull one back and give the travelling fans something to shout about.

The comeback never really got going, though. Messi was brought on from the bench and, with ten minutes left on the clock, did what he so often does — bending a free-kick into the bottom corner to make it 3-1 and put the result beyond doubt.

What it means

Argentina finish top of Group J with maximum points and head into the Round of 32 to face Cape Verde, sending a clear warning to whoever they meet next. For Jordan, this is the end of their World Cup adventure, but they leave with their heads up after a spirited second-half showing — and Al-Tamari in particular will have caught a few eyes.

The bottom line: A controlled, professional win for Argentina, with just enough late drama and a touch of Messi magic to settle any nerves. Jordan can be proud of how they went about their business in their first ever World Cup.
