TATA IPL26-23rd match RCBvs LSG review with analysis of my pre match prediction.
The 23rd match of Tata IPL 2026 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), played on 15 April 2026 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, delivered a surprisingly one-sided contest that defied expectations of a high-scoring thriller. Instead of the anticipated run-fest on a batting-friendly pitch, RCB produced a disciplined bowling display to restrict LSG to 146 all out in 20 overs, before comfortably chasing down the target of 147 with five wickets in hand and 29 balls to spare. This clinical victory propelled RCB to the top of the points table with 8 points from 5 matches and an improved net run rate of +1.503, while LSG remained stuck at 4 points in seventh place with a further deteriorated NRR of around -0.804.
RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that paid rich dividends on a surface that offered early seam movement and later grip for the spinners, contrary to the venue’s usual reputation as a batting paradise with short boundaries and fast outfield. LSG’s innings never gained momentum. They managed only 35 runs in the powerplay for the loss of one wicket, and the middle order struggled to accelerate. Mitchell Marsh top-scored with a steady 40 off 32 balls, while Ayush Badoni contributed 38 off 24 and Mukul Choudhary added 39 off 28. However, Nicholas Pooran continued his poor form with just 1 off 7, and captain Rishabh Pant, who retired hurt early before returning, managed only a single before departing.
RCB’s bowling attack shone brightly. Rasikh Salam Dar ripped through the middle and lower order with an impressive 4/24 in his four overs, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up 3/27. Josh Hazlewood, named Player of the Match, delivered a economical spell of 4-0-20-1, maintaining tight lines and lengths. The LSG batting lineup collapsed in clusters, finishing at a below-par total that looked even more inadequate on this ground.
In the chase, RCB made light work of the target. Phil Salt fell early for 7, but Virat Kohli, coming in as an impact player, anchored the innings with a fluent 49 off 34 balls. Devdutt Padikkal provided support, and the middle order then exploded into action. Skipper Rajat Patidar smashed 27 off just 13 deliveries (including three sixes), while Jitesh Sharma chipped in with a quick 23 off 9. Tim David and Romario Shepherd finished unbeaten on 14 each off 8 balls as RCB reached 149/5 in only 15.1 overs. Prince Yadav took 3/32 for LSG, but the bowling attack as a whole leaked runs at nearly 10 per over and failed to create sustained pressure.
This result largely validated the pre-match prediction that RCB were strong favourites (around 60-65% chance of victory) due to their superior batting depth, home advantage, and better overall balance as defending champions. The forecast correctly highlighted LSG’s inconsistent batting, particularly the struggles of Nicholas Pooran and the top order, as well as RCB’s firepower through players like Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Jitesh Sharma—all of whom delivered in the match. The call that RCB would benefit from winning the toss and potentially bowling first also proved accurate.
However, the match deviated from expectations in one key area: the scoring rate. The prediction anticipated a high-scoring affair with combined totals potentially exceeding 400 runs and first-innings scores around 190-220 or higher, given Chinnaswamy’s history. In reality, the pitch played slower than usual, allowing bowlers to exploit variations effectively and keeping the total well below par. LSG’s bowling, expected to be a relative strength with Mohammed Shami’s economy, underperformed significantly and could not restrict the aggressive RCB lineup.
Overall, the pre-match analysis proved about 85-90% accurate. It rightly identified RCB’s edge in form, squad balance, and venue factors, while pinpointing LSG’s vulnerabilities that ultimately led to their downfall. The game turned into a bowler-dominated encounter in a batsman’s backyard, showcasing RCB’s all-round capabilities and reinforcing their status as genuine title contenders this season. LSG, on the other hand, must urgently find consistency from their star batters like Pant, Pooran, and Marsh if they are to climb the standings.
This comfortable win for RCB not only boosted their confidence but also sent a strong message to the rest of the league about their dominance at home. The match, though not the fireworks-filled spectacle many anticipated, provided an entertaining display of disciplined cricket and set up an exciting remainder of the IPL 2026 season.
