TATA IPL26 -22 nd match review with analysis pre match prediction CSK vs KKR

On a warm 14 thApril evening at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Chennai Super Kings secured a convincing 32-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in the 22nd match of the IPL 2026.

It was a much-needed win for the home side, who posted a competitive 192 for 5 before restricting their opponents to 160 for 7. This result marked CSK's second successive victory, lifting them off the bottom of the table with four points, while KKR remained winless after five games, stuck on just one point from an earlier no-result.

KKR won the toss and elected to bowl first, hoping that dew and a chasing advantage would work in their favour. The pitch, a typical black-soil Chepauk surface, offered good carry and stroke-play early on before slowing down and assisting the spinners as the game progressed. CSK made the most of the powerplay, racing to 72 for 2 in six overs. Young Ayush Mhatre provided the fireworks with a blistering 38 off just 17 balls, striking six boundaries and two sixes at a strike rate of over 223. Sanju Samson, in excellent form, followed with a measured yet aggressive 48 off 32 deliveries.

Dewald Brevis chipped in with a useful 41 off 29, while useful contributions from the lower order helped CSK reach a defendable total. KKR's spinners, including Sunil Narine who took 1 for 21, managed to apply the brakes after the initial onslaught, but the early damage proved costly.

In reply, KKR's chase never really gathered momentum. They lost early wickets, with Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed striking in the powerplay to remove Finn Allen and Sunil Narine. The middle overs belonged firmly to CSK's spinners. Afghan left-arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad was the standout performer, returning impressive figures of 3 for 21 in four overs. His variations, particularly the wrong'un, dismantled KKR's middle order: he accounted for captain Ajinkya Rahane, bowled Cameron Green for a golden duck, and removed Rinku Singh cheaply.

Akeal Hosein provided excellent support with economical figures of 1 for 26. Despite a late 63-run partnership between Ramandeep Singh (35) and Rovman Powell (31 not out), the required rate climbed too high. KKR finished well short, unable to overcome the spin squeeze on a slowing track.

Noor Ahmad deservedly earned the Player of the Match award for his game-changing spell. MS Dhoni remained unavailable, still recovering from a calf injury, while Varun Chakravarthy returned for KKR but could not make a decisive impact.

Match Predicted

My pre-match prediction proved remarkably accurate. I rightly identified CSK as clear favourites, citing their home advantage at Chepauk, recent momentum from the win over Delhi Capitals, and the strength of their spin attack on a pitch that typically assists tweakers in the latter stages. I highlighted Sanju Samson's purple patch and Ayush Mhatre's explosive powerplay ability—both players delivered exactly as anticipated. The expected score of around 170-190 if batting first was spot on, as was my assessment of KKR's batting inconsistency and bowling vulnerabilities.

The historical dominance of CSK over KKR, combined with the venue's tendencies, also played out as I described. The only minor deviation was that KKR's late resistance gave them a slightly more respectable total than might have been expected, but it came far too late to alter the outcome.

Overall, the match followed a familiar Chepauk script: a strong start with the bat, followed by spin dominance in defence. My preview captured the key dynamics of this bottom-of-the-table clash perfectly, from the "battle of stragglers" framing to the likely impact of dew and toss decisions. CSK now climb the table with renewed confidence, while KKR face increasing pressure to secure their first win of the season. It was another entertaining chapter in this classic IPL rivalry.
