Prediction 5th tata IPl Match
This should be a cracking opener for both sides at the Ekana Stadium tonight.
It's Lucknow Super Giants' first match of the IPL 2026 season against Delhi Capitals, with Rishabh Pant's men hosting Axar Patel's side under the lights. Both teams missed the playoffs last year, so there's plenty of motivation to get off to a strong start.
The pitch at Ekana tends to be on the slower side, especially later in the game, with decent help for spinners and cutters. First-innings scores have hovered around 170-180 on average in recent seasons, and batting first has often been the safer bet here because the surface can grip and slow up under lights. The boundaries are long too, so it's not the easiest ground for big hitting. Expect a tactical battle rather than a run-fest.
Quick look at the key players and recent form
For LSG (home side):
Pant is under the spotlight as captain and will likely bat higher up – he's a proven match-winner when he clicks (over 3,500 IPL runs at a strike rate above 147). Nicholas Pooran remains a middle-order destroyer, while the top order looks solid with Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram. The real talking point is Mayank Yadav
– fully fit again after those injury troubles, and he's the express pace bowler everyone wants to see. When he's on song he hits 150+ kph and can be unplayable. Mohammed Shami brings experience and control, Anrich Nortje adds bounce, and they've got useful spin options like Shahbaz Ahmed. Overall, their attack looks well balanced for this ground.
For DC:
KL Rahul (now with DC) knows this pitch inside out from his LSG days and is coming off a strong season with 500+ runs at a high strike rate. Pathum Nissanka or Abhishek Porel should give them a solid start, Tristan Stubbs and David Miller add power in the middle, and Axar Patel is a proper all-rounder who leads by example. Their bowling has variety – Kuldeep Yadav is a big threat on a slowing pitch, Lungi Ngidi and the pacers (including Auqib Nabi possibly debuting) will look to exploit any early movement. DC's attack is disciplined, but they can be a bit reliant on their spinners here.
Head-to-head is close but slightly in DC's favour (they've won 4 out of 7), including both games last season. That said, LSG have been competitive at home.
Who is expected to win?
It's a very even contest on paper – most previews are calling it 50-50. DC have the edge in recent match-ups and a strong bowling unit that suits the conditions, especially after winning the toss and choosing to bowl first (which is smart on this pitch). But LSG at home, with Mayank Yadav back firing on all cylinders and a settled squad, feel like they have that extra bit of firepower and crowd support. Pant will be desperate for a big performance too.
My call: Lucknow Super Giants to edge it, probably by 10-20 runs or a tight chase. The home advantage and that pace attack (Mayank + Shami) could just prove decisive on a tricky surface. Having said that, one bad over from either side could swing it the other way – these two always produce close games.
Should be a proper contest. Enjoy the match!
