Benzema Joins Al-Hilal, Sparking Ronaldo Row in Saudi Football

The Saudi Pro League made headlines again on 2 February 2026, but this time it wasn't just about money – it was about rivalries, bruised egos, and a brewing feud between two of football's greatest ever players. Karim Benzema's move to Al-Hilal has shaken up the league, whilst simultaneously ruffling feathers in the camp of Cristiano Ronaldo over at Al-Nassr.

Benzema's arrival at Al-Hilal comes after things turned sour at his previous club, Al-Ittihad. Disagreements over his salary and image rights led to a very public falling out, and the French striker eventually walked away on a free transfer to join the league's current leaders. For Al-Hilal, it's a brilliant piece of business that cements their position at the top. For everyone else in the league, it's a worrying sign that the gap between first and the rest is only going to get bigger.

Not everyone is thrilled about the move, though. Over at Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly far from happy. The Portuguese legend has been noticeably absent from his team's recent match against Al-Riyadh, and most people have put two and two together – it looks very much like a protest. Ronaldo and his camp are said to feel that Al-Hilal has been given special treatment when it comes to signing players, leaving Al-Nassr at an unfair disadvantage. It's an awkward situation for the Saudi football authorities, who are now faced with the tricky task of keeping their biggest stars happy whilst trying to maintain a genuinely competitive league.

The Benzema-Ronaldo situation highlights the bigger challenges facing Saudi football right now. Whilst the league has done a fantastic job of luring the world's biggest names with eye-watering wages, managing the rivalries and clashing personalities that come with them is proving a far tougher nut to crack. As Benzema steps onto the pitch for Al-Hilal, all eyes will be watching to see whether these football superstars can actually get along in a league that is becoming just as famous for its drama as it is for its football.
